Energy modeling

Whole-building energy models that answer the questions your project is actually asking: how many LEED points, whether the design meets code on the performance path, and which option costs less to run.

What we model for

LEED energy performance

Baseline and proposed models for the Minimum Energy Performance prerequisite and Optimize Energy Performance credit, including reviewer responses.

ASHRAE 90.1 Appendix G

Energy code compliance

Performance path compliance when a prescriptive path does not fit the design.

ASHRAE 90.1 and state energy codes

Design option studies

Side-by-side comparisons of HVAC systems, glazing, envelope, and controls strategies early enough to change the design.

Annual energy and cost by end use

What is included

Scope is set in the proposal and fits the project. These are the deliverables we typically provide.

  • Modeling inputs and assumptions summary
  • Baseline and proposed building models
  • Energy and cost by end use
  • LEED energy documentation and narrative
  • Option comparison memo
  • Response to LEED review comments
  • Coordination with the design team
  • Model files on request

How a modeling project runs

  1. Kickoff and inputs

Drawings, schedules, systems, and utility rates.

  2. Baseline model

    Built to the governing standard.

  3. Proposed model

    The design as drawn.

  4. Results and options

    Compare, adjust, and rerun.

  5. Documentation

    Submittal-ready reports and reviewer responses.

Standards and references we work to

  • ASHRAE Standard 90.1 Appendix G
  • ASHRAE Standard 209
  • LEED v4 and v4.1
  • IES Virtual Environment
  • ASHRAE BEMP

Questions about energy modeling

When should energy modeling start?

For design guidance, at schematic design, when system and envelope choices are still open. For LEED documentation alone, design development drawings are enough to start.

What software do you use?

IES Virtual Environment for whole-building simulation, which is accepted for LEED and Appendix G compliance.

Do you respond to LEED reviewer comments?

Yes. Responding to review comments on the energy model is part of our LEED modeling scope.

Can you model an existing building?

Yes. Calibrated models of existing buildings support Level 3 audits and measure savings estimates.

Need an energy model?

Send the drawings and tell us whether this is for LEED, code compliance, or design decisions. We reply within one business day.
